What You Need To Know About Layout Of The Thesis Online

In addition to formatting theses and projects for submission to the Library, the theses office provides assistance with extended essays. We strongly recommend using the Library’s thesis template when formatting your thesis. You can find the Impaginazione tesi online settings on this page.

A Thesis Is Composed Of The Following Parts

The file format, the file size, and the page size

In order to submit the thesis to the Library, you must convert it to .pdf format (maximum 400MB).

US Letter pages (8.5X11) are required for these. 11X17 and 8.5X11 landscape pages are also acceptable. Please do not submit legal- or A4-sized pages.

Font

Space between lines

In the template, single-spaced block quotations are used in place of 1.5 line spacing in text.

Margins

Margin should be set as follows:

Left/right: 1.25″

A top/bottom measurement of 1″

Pigmentation

The title page is the only page that does not require sequential numbering. Each page number should be positioned at the bottom center, at least 0.5″ from the edge.

Roman numerals must be used to number the preliminary pages of the thesis. For the main body of the thesis, page numbers must restart on page one. These page numbers are preprogrammed into the thesis template.

Style of Citation

There is no specific citation style required by the SFU Library. Depending on the purpose of your research, you may need to consult a graduate handbook, your supervisor, or a liaison librarian.

It is acceptable for submission to the SFU library to use the default formatting in the library’s thesis template, provided that it meets some requirements of your citation style.

Theses accumulative

The format of a cumulative, paper-based, thesis must be the same as for other submissions. More information can be found in your department’s graduate handbook or by contacting your supervisor. Consult the Copyright and your thesis FAQ if you are including published papers in your thesis.

Essays in Expanded Form

A single document and submission should be used for all extended essays. The title page formatting information on extended essays provides an example of a title page for an extended essay.

Language

It is the Library’s requirement that theses written in a language other than English should have a second title page in English. There must also be English supporting documents.

Information About the Individual

Prior to publication, all personal information, including signatures, email addresses, and phone numbers, must be removed from the thesis. Your own contact information must be removed from a survey instrument or consent form, for example.

Pages With No Content

Blank pages need to be removed from the thesis before it can be published.
